All is divine…
…why doesn’t it all feel divine? We hear this statement “everything is Divine!” and yet something about it is hard to digest. When we see war, sickness and suffering it is hard to say “it’s all God” or “it’s all love”. Why is that?
Though on some ultimate level this is true, we can still see a difference between a shanti town corrugated-iron shack and a goldleaf painted cathedral. We can see the difference between an unwashed womanshouting expletives with a fag dangling out her mouth and a healthy radiant yoga woman practicing her postures. We can see the difference between a greasy fast-food burger and a delicately arranged gourmet meal. What is that difference?
The difference is vibration, and a certain divine order.
You can see in this picture of a shanty town and a cathedral, the former is chaotic. The cathedral has been intentionally created to harmonise with divine order, using scared geometry:
The higher the vibration of something, the closer it is somehow to the Divine Resonance. It is not a matter of better than or worse than…judgement somehow doesn’t help. It is just that we can all discern beauty, we can all discern godliness, we can all discern grace.
We can use the tantric principle of Shakti to understand it better. In tantric theory all of manifest life is Shakti (energy) and all of that Shakti is the form created by the formless, known as Shiva or Consciousness. So all of manifest life is created by Consciousness (some people call this “God”). Yet not all creation is as clear a reflection of the source.
Imagine the source was the moon. A still, crystal-clear lake is a clearer reflection of that moon than is a swirling murky pond. Both a relfections of the same moon, but one is more clear than the other. Thus to know the moon, we’d be better off gazing into the still lake than the murky pond!
If the Source is Consciousness, then a still, crystal clear mind is a clearer reflection than a stirred-up murky mind!
We create our lives from our minds. Even our bodies are created from our thoughts and states of mind. So all that we create from a cluttered mind will be a distorted form of Shakti…not a very clear reflection of the Source, of the Divine. Yes it still comes from the same Source…everything does. But it makes it harder to connect to the source when it is very distorted.
Some forms of Shakti have been created from Source with intention and with a clear meditator’s mind. Think of temples built from states of prayer, works of art created as devotion. Or imagine Devadasi (temple dancers) dances performed from deep meditative trance. Have you ever heard sacred music created from potent silence?
When we create from Source without the distortion of a confused or busy mind, then we create form of a divine vibration. Conscious creativity. Even each word we utter will carry a divine vibration. Each touch to our lover shimmers with godliness. Each action we perform is filled with love.
This is Pure Shakti. Freed from the distortions and impurities. A high vibration. When Shiva (consciousness) and Shakti (form) meet in this way, often we use the word “grace”. We may see such a form as being graceful.
Purity in Tantra is not about being a goody goody. It is about being clear and transparent. It is also not about rejecting the “dark” stuff, but bringing consciousness to it; bringing the acceptance of unconditional love to the unloved parts. Love heals, and in this healing a shadow is “purified”, or made whole.
Meditation purifies. Silence purifies. Nature purifies. Sacred space purifies. Stillness purifies. Pure food and pure water purify us. Being around pure people, those with a high vibration, those who radiate love, also purifies us… if we surrender to it!
And then something miraculous happens! Tantrics have called it “transfiguration”. You are looking at a person and you see God. In form. You see Shiva IN Shakti. Not your head saying “everyone is God”, but you actually see without doubt godliness before you. And once you have truly seen in one person you can see in all. Once your perception has learned to look for the Divine vibration, to see Truth, you can go and see it everywhere! You can see the source at the root of all creation, no matter what the vibration is! We can see the divine source within the shanty town, the goddess in the old hag, and the silvery moon reflected in the murky pond. Everything is Divine…
